GTA IV download size: will it be over 230GB?
Seven weeks from launch, Rockstar still hasn't said how big Grand Theft Auto VI will be, and 230GB sits right where the guesswork gets tense.

GTA VI is coming soon, but the download size is still unknown. The best-sourced estimates put the base game under 200GB. However, a day-one patch, an unverified 244.86GB PlayStation screenshot and Rockstar's appetite for scale all pull the other way.
The prediction
Will the GTA VI download size be over 230GB?
The fine print decides this one. Which platform counts, whether the figure is the download or the installed size, and whether a day-one patch is included can each move the number by tens of gigabytes.
The timing is fixed. Rockstar has confirmed a November 19 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with digital pre-load opening November 12, and the physical edition is a download code rather than a disc, according to IBTimes UK. Every buyer downloads the full game, so the store figure should be public before launch.
Delphi’s odds

The case for YES
The day-one patch does the heavy lifting. GTA Boom's pre-load guide expects a 150GB to 200GB base game with a day-one patch of 20GB to 50GB on top, and tells players to clear 250GB. At the top of both ranges, the total clears 230GB comfortably. If the pre-load build ships with the patch baked in, the store figure could land over the line on its own.
A screenshot already says yes. On September 19, a Reddit post claimed a PlayStation screen showed "244.86 GB required" for GTA VI. It is unverified, and Sony's public store page doesn't show it. But it is the most specific number in circulation, and it sits above the threshold.
Rockstar's ambition runs one direction. Red Dead Redemption 2 takes roughly 150GB on PC, and Rockstar calls GTA VI the biggest evolution of the series yet. Leonida is a whole state, not a city, and Rockstar games carry huge volumes of radio, dialogue and ambient audio. Fans who have run the numbers keep landing high: the original poster in one widely shared Reddit thread guessed 220GB to 296GB.
The case for NO
The best-sourced number is under 200GB. GTA 6 Intel, an account with a record of accurate calls, posted in 2024 that the game would be "just under 200 GB". Most planning guides still cluster at 150GB to 200GB. Driffle puts the day-one patch at 15GB to 30GB, which leaves a 175GB base at roughly 200GB to 210GB, well short of 230GB.
Rockstar launches smaller than it ends. Red Dead Redemption 2 launched at 99GB on PS4 and 107GB on Xbox One, and GTA V's next-gen edition installs at about 86.8GB on PS5. The bloat in both came later, from years of online content.
Online may not be in the launch download. Dataminers say Xbox Store metadata splits GTA VI into four packages, including one labeled "Story," and industry commentary points to a 2027 online launch. Neither is confirmed. But a story-only day-one download removes the component that made GTA V so heavy.
The Series S sets a ceiling. The 512GB Series S has about 364GB of usable space, and it is a confirmed launch console. Rockstar has every reason to keep the install from eating two-thirds of it.
What to watch
This prediction should settle on a hard number, and soon. As of late September, neither Rockstar nor either console store has published a size, but the figure has to appear on the store listings before pre-load opens November 12.
Signals that would move this market are an official PlayStation or Microsoft Store listing, a credible confirmation or debunk of the 244.86GB screenshot, and any Rockstar word on whether Online ships on day one. Treat viral numbers with care: a doctored 676.7GB Xbox listing fooled plenty of people last December.
The base-game reporting points toward NO. YES lives in the day-one patch and in how the rules count it.
